Tonight at 6:30 is the next meeting to collect and cosolidate ideas and thoughts from the subcommittees and get organized for the meeting with the Diocese on Thursday.

On January 18th, 2008, the Diocese of Rochester closed 13 of the 24 elementary schools in Monroe County. Saint Margaret Mary School in Irondequoit was one of those schools that was closed. However, a little crack was opened in the door to allow for each school to provide a plan to the Diocese to keep their school open. The parents of Saint Margaret Mary School are persuing the option to provide a plan to the Diocese to allow SMM School to remain open.

Does anyone have any speculation or hard info as to why the registration date was pushed back to start one week later? Does this have anything to do with the meetings being held with the schools scheduled to close? Is it related to the fear/fact that there aren't enough seats for all those displaced? SMM parents, talk to me please!

There was just a story on R News. It said something to the effect that it was pushed back because so many schools have plans to present to the Diocese this week and that they will review the plans and respond to parents.
It also said that current Catholic schools parents will have until 3/19 to register for next year.

The registration date was pushed back because the Diocese realized that "if" they keep some of the schools open, it would be a nightmare for them to have registration before the announcement. The way they had registration set up, if you put SMM first choice, you could get closed out of your alternative choices. If you put your alternatives first with a note that said you would prefer SMM if it stayed open, then they would have to go through all the sheets by hand. I'm taking it as a sign that they might really be considering the plans being put forth.
"If" they keep some of the schools open, it would be a nightmare for them as parents from the other schools scream bloody murder, demanding to know why their school gets the axe, while others get a reprieve. The reaction would be more intense than it is now. Doug Mandelaro is quoted in today's paper as saying "that it would take extraordinary circumstances to reverse Clark's decision". I think people need to be realistic. It is very unlikely.
Can't decide if the change in registration dates are a positive sign or just delaying the inevitable. Just saw on the Channel 10 website that St John's Rochester raised $200K in pledges. Kudos to their hard work. My thoughts and prayers are with the SMM team as they present our proposal tomorrow. I wish we all had the hindsight to have begun exploring this process to become independant in the fall of 2007 when our first letters from the Bishop came home. Let God's will be done and remember He will provide!
